This last week Lleyton Hewitt won the International Tennis Hall of Fame award. American Lisa Raymond came in at number 2, while doubles specialist Jonas Bjorkman finished in 3rd place. The voting period lasts for 4 weeks and Tennis fans from over 140 nations participate.

Hewitt was clearly in appreciation of the honour “Being nominated for the Hall of Fame is such a huge honor for me already, and to experience this incredible support from the fans while going through the Hall of Fame process just makes it even more special,”

During his career he won 30 singles titles and 3 doubles titles. His top achievements were his win in the 2001 US Open as well as the 2002 Wimbledon title. He also reached the Australian Open final in 2005 where he lost an epic match to Marat Safin. Some of his best performances were in Davis Cup format where he had a very strong record. Who could forget his first ATP title in his hometown of Adelaide where as a 16 year old he beat Andre Agassi in the semi finals and then took the title by beating fellow Aussie Jason Stoltenberg to win the Adelaide International.

Retired in 2016… he then made a come back in 2018 in doubles and is now considered semi retired. He is the Team Captain of the Davis Cup Australia Team.

Hewitt has always been a fighter and in his early days a lot of Aussie fans didn’t warm to him. As time went on and he mellowed a bit, he won over the respect of the Aussie and worldwide Tennis fans as a fierce competitor and a top level Tennis player. He always gave it 100% and when you tuned in to watch a match with Hewitt you knew that you should always be prepared for a long dogged match.

No doubt we will see him again playing doubles in some tournament, somewhere in the world… and we look forward to it.
