With the news just this week that yet another coach is parting ways with Zverev it does beg the question, why? David Ferrer said that ” I had to decide by the end of the year;I spoke to Alexander and told him that I preferred not to continue working with him in 2021″. He didn’t give any particular reason and deflected and said ” the time wasn’t right”. He is the third coach after Juan Carlos Ferrero and Ivan Lendl to part ways with the German.
Lendl said back in 2019 that there were a few off court issues that needed to be dealt with to then work in a way consistent with his philosophy.
2020 was no doubt the loudest both on the court and off it for Zverev. On the court he had his best run yet at a major by reaching the final of the US Open. Off the court he was accused of domestic assault by his ex girlfriend, him becoming a father as his ex girlfriend fell pregnant, plus his involvement in the controversial Adria tour.
Lets hope that 2021 is successful both on and off the court for Zverev and he had an excellent new coach in his corner soon to help him reach the best of his potential. The game definitely needs him challenging Federer, Nadal, Thiem, Djokovic to make it more interesting.
