A few days ago we were all talking about an end of year final at the ATP finals between Nadal and Djokovic as they were both on track to meet each other there. Meanwhile Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev had different ideas.

Thiem played a high quality match and took his opportunities and outplayed Djokovic while Medvedev outplayed Nadal in the other semi.

Thiem bought his A game to the final against Medvedev and took the first set 6-4… but the Russian constantly changed up his tactics and found a way back into the match to eventual overcome the Austrian 7-6 6-4 in the last 2 sets.

With the win Medvedev proved he is a force to be reckoned with –

  • He is the first player since 2007 to beat the worlds top 3 players en route to winning a tournament
  • He took home the biggest title of his career by winning in London
  • He is the fourth player in history to beat the top 3 ranked players in the world in one event.
  • He has a career high ranking of 4 in the world.

Last year during the American hardcourt season he really announced himself to the Tennis world with some big title wins and then reaching the final of the US Open.. One would feel that if he can maintain his focus it is just a matter of time before he has a few Grand Slam titles.
