The finals of the Australian Open played out as expected given that Djokovic obtained yet another ( 9th ) Australian Open Crown, while Naomi Osaka got her 4th Grand Slam title at the age of 23 years old.
Let’s talk about Naomi. This match was set up to be a blockbuster final after the last match they had at the Australian Open. Sadly, Brady did not play her best and sprayed a lot of forehands and backhands when she really needed them. Osaka played solid Tennis and was cool and calm under pressure. At the age of just 23, it’s quite astonishing the maturity of Osaka. While Brady is definitely on the up and up and if she can maintain her consistency, she will be in the top 10 soon, it is hard to see her winning a Grand Slam title anytime soon unless she cuts down the unforced errors and can hit her first serves in the big moments. Australian Open 2021 was Osaka’s moment… and now we all are wondering how many more she will get in her career.

Osaka sure enjoyed this years Australian Open

Novak came through the Australian Open final in straight sets. The final was quite a disappointing match especially considering that Medvedev was on a 20 match winning streak. The only really great part of the match was the last part of the first set where Medvedev was calm and held the error count to a minimum. For the rest of the match Djokovic played well ( but nothing amazing compared to how well he can play), while Medvedev couldn’t hit his first serves when needed, and hit a lot of easy rally balls long or into the net. This was not the Medvedev we know who is super strong in defence and has recently been showing how hard he is to beat with his more honed offensive game with his forehand and serve turning into real weapons.

Number 9 for Novak Djokovic at Australian Open

Another Australian Open is over and it can be said that it was a pretty great success. While it was definitely different to normal, it was overall a great tournament and most of the players ended up feeling grateful and happy that they were able to come down under and play the tournament.
Now… what happens next on the Tennis calendar remains to be seen.. but let’s hope that things start to resemble the old normal soon… Hopefully we have the French Open to watch again soon, given the vaccines are being distributed around the world now
